Does ChatGPT recommend your business? How to check

You can do it yourself, and a first check takes less than an hour. Below is the procedure we use, and the three mistakes that make the result look better than it is.

In short. To find out whether an AI assistant recommends your business, asking it about your business by name is not enough: you have to ask the questions a customer would ask, several times, on several assistants, and check every name by hand. Hotel Visibile does this for independent businesses — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, in two languages — and delivers a short report within 24 hours, free of charge. We started with independent hotels in Italy; the method is the same for any business that customers find by asking.

How to check it yourself

  1. Ask a customer's question, not your business name. If you ask “tell me about Business X”, the assistant will describe it — but that only shows it knows you, not that it would recommend you to someone who doesn't. Ask the way a customer would:
    • “Who is the best family dentist in [city]?”
    • “Where can I eat [cuisine] near [landmark]?”
    • “A quiet boutique hotel in [city] with parking?”
  2. Use a clean session. A private window or an account without history: assistants take earlier conversations into account, and you have probably talked about your business there already.
  3. Ask several times, on several assistants. At least three times per question, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Answers change from one run to the next: a single answer tells you nothing.
  4. Repeat in a second language. Customers from abroad ask in their own language, and the answer is often different.
  5. Write down three things for every answer: whether your business is named, how it is described, and which sources the assistant cites. The sources tell you where the AI gets its information about you — and whether your own website is among them.

Three mistakes that inflate the result

What we measured

With this method we asked 172 questions about six independent hotels in Italy, in Italian and English, on four assistants. The hotel was named in 47 of them — just over one in four. But from one hotel to another the rate ranged from 4 % to 72 %, and the simplest question — which hotels are there in this town — was the one where they appeared least. The full figures, including the limits of the sample. Typical questions for other kinds of business are on this page.

When it makes sense to ask us

If you only want to know whether you are named, the steps above are enough. The audit is useful when you want to know why you are not: besides the answers, we check the structured data on your website, your reviews and the sources the AI relies on, and we deliver at most three findings, each with its source.

The audit is free and arrives within 24 hours. If you then want us to fix what is missing, we will propose it separately — it is a different decision, and you can say no.

What we don't promise. No visibility result is guaranteed — by us or by anyone else. Whoever promises one isn't measuring.
